Balanced Men

The Balanced Man Program was instituted at the Kansas Epsilon Chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon in the Spring 2001. The Program is different from the traditional "pledge" structure, and allows members to fully learn the meaning of brotherhood without the dysfunction that can be brought upon by a pledge system.

Kansas Epsilon Academic Plan
Emporia State University

The Goal of Kansas Epsilon's Academic Plan is to regain the prestige of SigEp's grade point average at the University of Emporia by mentoring each brother to achieve his full academic potential.

Part 1: Incentives for Academic Excellence

Part 2: Academic Rehabilitation Program

Part 3: Consequences of Poor Academic Performance

Part 4: Creating a Culture that Promotes Academic Excellence

Part 5: Adopting and Amending the Academic Plan

Part 1: Incentives for Academic Excellence

1. Brothers will be paired up, lower GPAs with higher GPAs. The pair of brothers that achieves the highest GPA combination at the end of the semester will receive $50 off of their dues

.
2. The brother with the highest percentage increase in their semester GPA from one semester to the next will receive a discount amounting to $100 off of their next semester's dues.

Part 2: Academic Rehabilitation Program

1. The academic plan is designed to create incentives for academic achievement, find and fix emerging academic problems, and foster those brothers who are in academic trouble.

2. Key to the success of the academic plan is the academic rehabilitation program. The academic rehabilitation program will consist of the following:
a. Any member scoring below the mandatory 2.5 GPA required to be a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon will receive a mandatory 5 structured/planned study hours per week with the brother's academic partner or mentor.

1.All study hours must be completed at the house or another approved location and an approved study schedule must be submitted to the academic chair.

b. A completed schedule of all the brother's test and paper due dates must be submitted to the academic chair. (i.e. a copy of your syllabi)

Part 3: Consequences of Poor Academic Performance

1. Any brother whose semester GPA falls below 2.5 shall be placed within the academic rehabilitation program described in Part 2.

2. Any brother whose GPA falls below the all IFC average of a 2.2 will be placed within the academic rehabilitation program described in Part 2 and will be restricted from any and all weeknight social events which include band parties, socials, and date nights. These restrictions will be held in place until such time as the brother demonstrates academic improvement to the academic chair. Demonstration of a B or higher from each and every of the brother's current classes.

3. Any brother whose GPA falls below a 2.0 will be placed within the academic rehabilitation program described in Part 2. Also, the brother will lose all social privileges with the fraternity and will have their right to vote in all chapter meetings, excluding annual elections of the executive board, revoked for a period of one semester. This also includes going to the bar to drink. Any member falling under this category will be punished according to a Standard's Board decision. It is the responsibility of members to know and enforce this rule. Attendance at any and all rituals is also suspended, excluding rights of passage. The academic chair may reinstate social privileges if academic improvement, as defined in Part 3 Section 2, is demonstrated successfully.

4. Any brother whose semester GPA falls below a 1.5 will be placed on full fraternity probation and will be prohibited from attending any chapter event, as described in Part 3 Section 4, save member development meetings, chapter meetings, mentor/mentee meetings, academic/tutor meetings, sporting events, and community service events. In addition, 100% attendance at the allowed events is mandatory unless explicit permission is attained from the executive board or academic chair. Consideration can be made to reinstate some privileges if, and only if, academic improvement, such as described in Part 3 Section 2, is demonstrated. However, any member whose GPA reaches a 0.00 will be considered for immediate and complete expulsion from the chapter and the chapter premises pending a decision mandated by the Standard's Board.

Part 4: Creating a Culture that Promotes Academic Excellence
1. The semester and final GPA of each member will be used as a preference tool for selecting housing room assignments. The brother with the highest GPA will be able to choose his room from the available rooms first, followed by the second highest GPA and so on. In the case of roommates, the choosing brother has the option of choosing roommates regardless of their GPA's.

2. A list will be compiled of all members and their majors and that will be posted around the house for reference.

Part 5: Adopting and Amending the Academic Plan

1. This academic plan may be amended by a majority vote, of those brothers with the right to vote, of all brothers at a regularly scheduled chapter meeting.

2. Members not attending the meetings, that have amendments brought forth for this academic plan, forfeit all rights of voicing further opinions upon the said amendments until the next chapter meeting.

growing up.
